Don has been intimately involved in auto racing and the maintenance, preparation and campaigning of amateur and professional cars for over 25 years. Don began his career in a machine shop and working for Skip Barber Racing School. During this time he also maintained and raced go-karts for himself, as well as, for his friends. He quickly moved up to the IMSA series in 1984 as crew chief for Tom Gloy Sports Racing. In 1986, he was invited to join Newman Haas Racing. During the next 22 years, Don was responsible for a variety of technical and mechanical duties for Newman Haas. The list of racers Don worked with include Mario & Michael Andretti, Nigel Mansell, Paul Tracy, Cristiano deMatta, Bruno Junqueira, Oriol Servia and Graham Rahal. During his final nine years with Newman Haas he served as Chief Mechanic, responsible for a crew of ten and 2 race cars, and traveled the world winning a Championship in 2002, and earning runner up finishes in 2003, 2004 & 2005.
Don Hoevel – 1989
With an expanding family, which includes a son diagnosed with Autism, Don retired his full time “road warrior” status in 2008 and established Don Hoevel Racing. Since then the shop has quickly become a hub and focal point for the restoration, repair, support and engineering of all manner of race and performance cars including “American Iron” muscle cars, specialty, vintage and exotic sports cars and current day professional race cars.
Don’s client base is a discriminating group which includes such noteworthy individuals as Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal and Rolex competitors Doug Grunnet and Steve Bertheau.
In 2011 Don was the leader of the crew which won the Rolex 24 at Daytona. He followed that up in 2012 as the Team Manager for a group of sportsman racers who, under Don’s guidance and leadership, were set to”hit above their weight” until a gut-wrenching transmission issue put their Porsche behind the wall with just over and hour left in the day long endurance test for both man and machine.
Support for Don from his clients, coupled with his track bred experience and results, have been the catalyst for a DHR expansion into the pro sports car ranks with plans in place to run their own Porsche GT team in the Grand Am Series.
